Making the best of your location
Sunday, May 10, 2009
Here are two images that were taken on my last trip to LA. The shot of Kendra is an example of making the best of your location. By the time I met up with Kendra it as late morning and the sun was high in the sky. We were scheduled to shoot at a golf course but after doing a bit of scouting I decided to just set up right in middle of the parking lot by laying two huge leaves on the ground and shoot overhead. The leaves were literally laying on the asphalt in the parking lot. Luckily Kendra was a trooper and I believe we pulled of a beautiful shot.
The second shot of Angela was in the Joshua Tree National Park. Because the wind was blowing so hard I tried to position the lights within some large boulders so my choice of location was limited. Again, you have to make due with the elements that you are presented with. As I always say, we don’t live in a perfect world. But often the restrictions that are forced upon us allow us to create images that we might not other wise think of.
The top image of Kendra was shot using one light shooting through a 60 inch white umbrella. The image of Angela in Joshua Tree National Park was shot with my three light set up using two large soft boxes from behind and a 60 inch white umbrella over head.
